Make Your Move Smoothly

I had a family member recently move homes and it reminded me that there are several tips that can make the process less stressful for anyone who’s moving. Here you are:

  1. Hire a professional to help.  It’s easy to think of saving a few bucks and renting the truck and doing it all on your own, but think of this: most movers charge by the hour.  For about $90/hour you can get 2 laborers and a moving truck.  You figure the truck alone will cost you close to $100 to rent with gas, not to mention all the wasted time going to pick it up, drive it, fill it with gas, and return it.  Not only will it save your wallet, it will save you time and it will save your back!  Professionals can move your house in much less time than most people can on their own.
  2. Take it seriously.  I’ve had several friends who needed help moving. When I showed up, half their stuff wasn’t even packed.  Preparing and planning ahead is the key.  If everything is packed up and sealed properly ahead of time, it makes moving day go so much smoother. (I’ve found the best prices for boxes at big box stores like Lowes.)
  3. Use this time to de-clutter and remove unwanted things from your life.  Donate to charities or throw things away.  A lot of charities around town will actually come to your house and pick things up for you.  This is a great way to help out others and make your move simpler!
  4. Take pictures of electronic hookups and wiring.  Also, how certain furniture comes apart.  By taking pictures, it will make your life much less frustrating when it’s time to reassembly everything in the new house.  I’ve personally done this and it worked wonders.
  5. Don’t forget to forward your mail with the post office and to change your address with all the mailings that you receive.  The forward will usually wear off after 6 months, so make sure you don’t forget about all your mail otherwise it might be lost for good.
  6. If you have pets, remember this can be traumatic for them.  It really can be a shock to their world and you might see them hide in the corner of your new home for several days.  Don’t worry – usually after a little time, they start to familiarize themselves with their new surroundings and will come back to being normal.

Moving is always quite a chore. A little preparing will make the whole process easier on your frustration meter! Best of luck!
